Dr. Seuss & the Art of Invention at the MSI

“There’s fun to be done,” with a new exhibit that showcases the life and work of Theodor Seuss Geisel. And yes, Seuss was really his middle name.

True to the high standards we’ve come to expect from Dr. Seuss and the Museum of Science and Industry, the interactive exhibit is both whimsical and informative, insightful and inspiring. Kids and adults will love looking at the evolution of Geisel’s art, which includes his early work illustrating political cartoons and advertising brochures. Be sure to ask your kids to help spot early relatives of Yertle the Turtle and Horton the Elephant.

Other highlights include:

  • The “Unorthodox Collection of Taxidermy,” a fantastical collection of wall-mounted, 3-D sculptures that Seuss created using real animal beaks, horns and antlers.
  • Interactive stations where visitors can “let loose with Dr. Seuss” as they experiment with sticky Oobleck, create “Lorax-inspired” inventions, and see the world that exists on a spec of dust.
  • Artifacts and clips from several “Seuss” movies, including a time-lapse video that shows how Jim Carrey was transformed into the Grinch for “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” (Hint: A lot of makeup!).

The final room in the exhibit is an enchanting “secret garden” that houses a collection of rarely seen, surreal paintings that Geisel created for his own enjoyment. The garden, along with the artwork that encompasses the space, is a fitting end to an inspired exhibit that celebrates art, innovation and the American ideal that anything is possible.

“Dr. Seuss & the Art of Invention” runs through January 8, 2012, at the Museum of Science and Industry. The exhibit is not included in Museum general admission and requires an additional timed-entry ticket. Click here for more information and to buy tickets.
