The Safe House serves some of the overwhelming need and demand for life-saving shelter and services within the City of Chicago. * Nearly 20 people per minute (10 million annually) are physically abused by an intimate partner in the US. * 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. * Between 3.3 million and 10 million children are witnesses to domestic violence each year and witnessing violence is the strongest risk factor of perpetuating that behavior. The full array of services provided by the WINGS staff includes emergency shelter, food, child and family counseling, medical and legal assistance, job search support and emotional healing. WINGS takes a holistic “strength-based” approach that highlights, encourages and develops each client’s strengths. Martina, one of the first graduates of The Safe House at WINGS Metro came to WINGS with her three children and a diaper bag. The staff at WINGS helped her file a restraining order again her husband, establish her immigration status, and assisted her with finding child care and other resources. With love, support and help, Martina has moved out of her WINGS apartment, has her own car, is working two jobs and is happy and excited about the future.
