SitStayRead’s mission is to improve the literacy skills of children in Chicago’s low-income neighborhoods. Founded in 2003, the organization brings teams of trained volunteers and certified reading-assistance dogs into Chicago classrooms to tackle the serious issue of childhood illiteracy in a fun way. Children read books about dogs to dogs, then write their own stories about the experience. As a result, the children make 47.8 percent greater fluency gains than their non-participating peers, according to an independent study conducted by Loyola University.
