’90s Lips, Sombré Hair and Other Fall Beauty Trends to Try Now!

Autumn is upon us. As you’re swapping your swimsuits and sandals for sweaters and boots, don’t forget to freshen up your beauty routine, too. Here are seven of our favorite stylish (but attainable) trends inspired by the change in season.

Multi-Colored Nails

Amber Edwards, nail director at Mario Tricoci, says this season’s biggest manicure trend is painting nails five different colors all in the same hue. “This looks more ‘together’ than just one accent nail,” she says. “The fun thing about this trend is that it can be whatever shades you choose like varying hues of red, purple, and so on.”

Sombré Hair

Colorist Kimberly Avino of Pascal Pour Elle in Glencoe sees many clients trying out sombré, which is a toned-down version of ombré. “As we head into fall, your skin tone changes, so rich tones like chestnut, copper and cranberry work well with the sombré style,” Avino says.

Long Bob

Seeking a fresh hairstyle for fall? Pascal Pour Elle stylist Kathy Kardas says long bobs with slightly long layers are on trend this season. The layers will add body and movement to your hair, which looks more current than a blunt style.

Black Eyeliner

“Black liner is back,” says Elise Brill, makeup artist and owner of Leesi B Cosmetics. “New for fall this year, I’m loving the clean nude eye with heavy liner.” Brill says to apply your favorite taupe or grey shadow across the lid, and then add black pencil liner on top, underneath the eye and inside the water line. Finally, smudge with the end of a sponge or a sponge brush.

Headbands

Sleek black headbands in leather and satin topped slicked-back ponytails and long, loose locks on the runways at New York Fashion Week. Make workday hair a bit more polished by adding a simple headband.

’90s-Inspired Lips

You probably never thought you’d see the return of deep brick-colored lipstick like the ’90s cult classic Chanel “Vamp.” But, guess what? It’s back. Matte brownish-red lip colors are huge this fall. Chanel “Vamp” has been renamed “Rouge Noir,” and it’s the perfect pick for the bold lip trend. Just remember: With a standout lip, you can go lighter on the rest of your makeup.

Bold lips not your style? Brill also says nude lips are getting lots of play this fall. “I recommend lining your lips with an invisible lip liner if you are not ready for a bolder lip,” says Brill. “Then apply a nude or warm lip color and blot.”

Red Nails

If you’re not into the multi-colored nail trend, red nails are always sexy and were spotted on the fall runways of numerous designers. To keep it modern, nails should be shorter and square shaped. Also try dark berry hues on nails this season.
