It’s an accepted fact that Chicago has delicious coffee and a captivating dance scene. What hasn’t been done before is a combination of the two: using dance to highlight the individuality of Chicago’s coffee shops and shine a light on the well deserving small shop owners.
Café Cortado focuses on the perseverance of PiniPico Brazilian Café and Sputnik Coffee Company. PiniPico Brazilian Café opened amidst the start of the pandemic, while Sputnik pivoted towards a reliance on grocery deliveries to get through. “….we were on slate to open in March, we ended up opening in April 2020 so the throes of the covid…it was nice because it gave us an opportunity to have a soft start… and serve the community as one outlet of I’m just going to walk out and get a coffee..” Candice Smith Dias of PiniPico Brazilian Cafe
Gaining recognition for her risk-taking and innovation, Eastman takes this project a step further by using a combination of livestream performance, interviews and dance film. Spanning from the Southside to the Northside, Eastman and videographer, Jordan Kunkel, will travel to the second location for the 2nd livestreamed section while the audience views the pre-recorded material. Interviews are given by Candice Smith Dias (PiniPico Brazilian Cafe) as well as Vova and Greesha Kagan of Sputnik Coffee Company. Five dancers perform in the piece; Keila Hamed Ramos, Abigail Roberts, Julia Schaeffer, Ashley Chung and Angela Risi. Film/Video collaborators include Jordan Kunkel, Lesley Reed and Timothy Tsang. This performance will take place on June 24th at 7:45pm virtually.
