July 22 @ 7:30 pm - July 23 @ 6:00 pm

$15

Lifeline Theatre will present Sandra Jackson-Opoku’s work-in-development, Hungry Ghost Festival (adapted from her new novel “Black Rice”) as part of their first Adaptation Development Showcase, Friday, July 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, July 23 at 4 p.m. at Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood Ave.

Hungry Ghost Festival tells the story of Shanghai’s Hungry Ghost Festival, where each year spirit Luz Lee reappears inexplicably. She travels to Greenville, Mississippi, a town ravaged by the Great River Flood of 1927, in order to unravel this riddle. There, a 17-year-old Luz, her Chinese grandfather and her African-American step-grandmother have all been forced to flee. Will Ghost Luz be able to solve the mystery of what she’s lost?

Sandra Jackson-Opoku (she/her) is an award-winning author of novels, “The River Where Blood is Born” and “Hot Johnny (and the Women Who Loved Him),” an Essence Magazine Hardcover Fiction Bestseller. Her fiction, poetry, essays, reviews, travel articles and dramatic works appear in Both Sides: Stories from the Border, storySouth, Obsidian, New Daughters of Africa, the Chicago Humanities Council and other outlets. Jackson-Opoku is a recipient of a Pushcart Prize nomination, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the American Library Association Black Caucus Award, a Chicago Esteemed Literary Artist Award and many other awards and honors.

Tanuja Devi Jagernauth, the second featured Adaptation Development Workshop playwright, will showcase work-in-progress, Churile, virtually in September – dates to be announced.

Hungry Ghost Festival will run approximately 2.5 hours with an intermission. Ticket prices are $15 for single tickets. Tickets may be purchased by visiting www.lifelinetheatre.com or at the Lifeline Theatre Box Office, 773.761.4477.
