Tortello Hosts Sagra Di Tortello with Guest Chef Jason Hammel
February 9 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm$40 – $80
On Sunday, Feb. 9, Tortello, the charming Italian mom-and-pop restaurant and pastificio in Wicker Park, is recreating one of Italy’s most prized culinary traditions on Division Street with its first-ever Sagra di Tortello. Acclaimed Chef Jason Hammel, James Beard “Best Chef” finalist and the force behind Logan Square’s Lula Cafe, will join Tortello’s Executive Chef Duncan Biddulph and owner Dario Monni to create a collaborative menu for this festive celebration of Italian cuisine and culture.
Commonly held in small towns throughout Italy, sagre are hyper-local food festivals centered around a particular culinary practice or ingredient. Tortello’s interpretation of the beloved event will highlight the seasonal winter ingredients of Italy and feature live music by local Italian folk group La Tosca, communal seating and the special three-course menu comprised of “sfoglia invernale,” a pie-like dish made with pasta instead of pastry and a savory filling, roasted porchetta with fennel and sea salt, seasonal salads, spaghetti presented in a wheel of parmigiana reggiano, sorbetto and more along with imported Italian wine. Seatings will be available at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. during the day-long event, allowing guests to enjoy the conviviality and festivities for either lunch or dinner.
In the spirit of true Italian hospitality, a portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to Pilot Light, a nonprofit organization co-founded by Chef Hammel that connects local chefs with Chicago Public Schools to develop food-based curriculum focused on educating students on the importance of making healthy choices.
