Guide to the Best Pizzas on the North Shore

It’s National Pizza Week, and Make It Better would like to point out there’s far more to pizza on the North Shore than a knock at the door and a cardboard box. Here are a few suggestions on where to go when you’ve simply got to have a pie:

A table for two:

Union Pizzeria is a great date spot, with fabulous brick-oven thin-crust pizza. Want to really switch it up? Try the Proscuitto and Arugula or Lamb Sausage with Greek Olives.

Make it a date: Check out a concert at SPACE, located next door.

Family-friendly:

Salerno’s in the Glen Town Center offers up a full menu, but kids dig the pizza by the slice. No fighting over toppings! Want to take it to the next level? Bravo! offers kids the chance to make their own pizza.

Make a day of it: Make A Messterpiece is directly across the street from Salerno’s, and The Kerasotes Glen 10 and Kohl Children’s Museum are both just a block away. (Psst…Kohl’s “Pizza: Any Way You Slice It!” exhibit opens January 18!)

Other family favorites:

The Silo in Lake Bluff gets top votes for deep dish on the North Shore and offers up tableside magic on Sunday evenings.

Buffo’s is a Highwood staple and a North Shore family favorite.

Pequod’s Pizzeria in Morton Grove is nestled into a neighborhood, giving it that “I’m going to my really fun neighbor’s house” feel.

Thin crust lovers:

Marcello’s in Northbrook gets high marks for its flat bread options, and the menu now includes a gluten-free option!

Get outside: Work up an appetite with a winter hike through the woods at the nearby River Trail Nature Center (3120 Milwaukee Ave., Northbrook)

One more? If it works for Oprah, it’s works for us–Pizano’s is famous for its thin crust creations.

Deep dish fans:

Sure, we all love Lou, but have you tried Carmen’s deep dish spinach and pesto yet?

Make a night of it: Indulge in deep dish, then catch a jazz set at Pete Miller’s.

Bring it home:

If a night out just isn’t going to happen, give your local Homemade Pizza Company a call.  A consistent North Shore favorite, you can take your creation home and bake it up in your oven. Grab one of their Caesar Salads, open a bottle of wine and you’re good to go!
