The Twinkie Turns 80

If only we look this good in our golden years.

It’s the Twinkie’s birthday today–that spongy yellow delicacy (Yes! Delicacy!) is 80 years old. And despite urban legend to the contrary, chances are the first Twinkie that came off the conveyor belt is not sitting on a shelf somewhere, free of decomposition.

In fact, the average Twinkie shelf-life is 25 days. Because they’re made without dairy products, Twinkies will last longer than your average baked good–but not much longer. So, the bad news is we’re not sure the ingredients are all that healthy, but the good news is they’re lactose-free!

If you’re looking for a low-cal dessert, the Twinkie isn’t too bad–one will set you back 150 calories. The hard part is eating just one! Or, treat yourself to the high-calorie version–head to Trax in Deerfield for their Trax Twilight treat, complete with vanilla and chocolate sauces, fresh strawberries and caramel drizzle.
