4 Closet Systems to Organize Your Wardrobe

Ever wonder why you can’t find anything to wear in your closet?

Let’s be honest, for most people it’s not due to of a lack of clothes—but a lack of organization. Oftentimes I find that my clients don’t even know what they’ve got because they can’t easily find garments in their closets. Though a closet organizer may seem like a splurge, in many cases it can end up saving you money and, more importantly, time. You’ll be less likely to repurchase the same things because you can see everything you’ve got, either hanging or folded neatly, right in front of you. And because you know where everything is, getting dressed in the morning is a breeze.

Not keen on organizing? Not to worry. We’ve rounded up four great organizer options to fit all wardrobes and budgets.

IKEA: Pax

This budget-friendly organizer is great for DIYers. Most options range from $175 (for your most basic) to $1,585 (with all the bells and whistles). You get to choose the color, size and style, which can get a little overwhelming. While you have the option to place an order online, it might be easier to purchase your closet system in the store. That way you can get all your questions answered, and if you bring it home with you, you avoid a costly delivery charge. Just remember to drive a vehicle with ample storage.

Container Store: Elfa

The Container Store’s Elfa organizers can take your closet to the next level. Depending on your needs, systems range from $430 (for a freestanding solution) to $3,900 (for a fully equipped walk-in). If you’re handy, this could be a do-it-yourself project. But thankfully, for the rest of us, they offer installation services for a fee. All Elfa components are adjustable, so take advantage of their free design service to create a system that works in your space. Shipping can get expensive, but in-store pick up is free and there are five locations in the Chicagoland area.

Closet Works

Closet Works is our top local pick. Local and long-established, the company has been in business in the Chicagoland area for over 25 years. They provide free consultation, plus a $25 gift card when you schedule your appointment. They offer a lifetime guarantee and include installation on every project. The best part? Most projects are completed in one day. But it doesn’t come without a price. Since all jobs are custom, pricing does vary depending on your space and needs. Prices start around $500 for a small reach-in, and go all the way up to $25,000. This is a great pick for those of us who want a no-muss, no-fuss experience.

California Closets

California Closets are considered the gold standard in closets. They’ve been in business for more than three decades. They offer complimentary, in-home design consultation. And these guys don’t just do closets either. California Closets will work on all areas of the home (think garage, entryway, pantry). Pricing starts at $500. As with Closet Works, costs vary due to the fact that this is a custom design. But here’s something you may not know: They offer a wide variety of environmentally sustainable options. All their boards are made with recycled wood fibers that are CARB (California Air Resources Board) compliant. They also boast a variety of sustainable features, including doors, drawer fronts and panels. Uncomplicated and eco-friendly? That’s a no-brainer.
