Décor Inspired by Our Favorite Chick Flicks

We love escaping into a good movie—especially if it has great set design! Who didn’t want to be cocooned in Meg Ryan’s charming shabby-chic marina-view apartment in “Sleepless in Seattle”? And, we’ve been dreaming (along with the rest of the collective female psyche) of a houseboat on Lake Union since 1993. Swoon-worthy sets are half the fun of movie watching. To bring home some of that movie magic, we recreated three of our favorite film interiors. Here’s how to get the looks.

Romantic Boudoir Inspired by “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”

A feminine, moody mix of shimmering mirrored surfaces and icy blue frills. The sexy, deco boudoir of Delysia Lafosse (played by Amy Adams) is sophisticated but totally girly; romantic but not at all cloying. A dramatic tufted headboard mimics the upholstered wall, while the satin bedding, crystal lamp and mirrored nightstand add glossy glamour. We found a near-perfect match for her silver leaf avian wallpaper with this gorgeous screen, and of course, no boudoir is complete without a lady-like vanity. We finished the look with a handsome deco accent chair in sumptuous grey velvet and a fluffy white sheepskin rug adds sensuous texture.

Sophisticated Office Inspired by “The Devil Wears Prada”

Miranda Priestly’s chilly exterior made for an incredibly stylish interior. Her Runway Magazine office, loosely based on American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour’s, is a perfect match for her steely, sophisticated elegance. This stainless steel and grey glass desk is a dead ringer for the one Priestly commands and pairs perfectly with a sleek executive chair. Black, white and silver frames make an understated gallery wall and an octagonal mirror offers a subtle reprieve from all the hard rectangular shapes. The mirrored console adds some feminine shimmer and the look is capped off with an urbane bar cart for those late nights at the office.

Beachy Living Room Inspired by “Something’s Gotta Give”

All hail the queen of memorable movie rooms! Producer Nancy Meyers has a knack for making movies you want to live in. While we’d gladly trade spaces with any of Meyers’ character, we couldn’t resist the classic Hamptons beach house of Diane Keaton’s character, Erica Barry, and the “fabulous two story living room” that launched a striped dhurrie trend that’s still going strong. Classic furniture and espresso wood finishes ground the beachy elements – seashells and sea grass – and relax the austere white and pale blue palette. A beach scene by Max Pechstein gives the room a jolt of color.
