Better or Bust: Topshop Makeup

Topshop finally opened its doors on Michigan Avenue last week, but fabulous fashion isn’t the only thing filling its shelves.

The British retailer has also launched a line of beauty products, and Make It Better’s editors took them for a test drive.

Lips

Lip Polish ($8): Associate Editor Liz Logan swears by this balm in “Rhubarb;” with its hint of shimmer and lasting formula, it’s become her daily lip product. “I love that the container has a mirror in it, so I can apply it wherever I am,” she says.

Lip Stick ($14): For this cross between a lipstick and lip pencil, Art Director Jessica DeJong was enamored of the “Enamoured” shade, which applied very smoothly. She found it a good neutral hue that also works well as a lip base.

Lips ($16): As a sucker for a red lip, I snatched up “Confession,” a lipstick in the perfect crimson shade for fall. It glides on like a dream and lasts late into a night of eating and drinking.

Eyes

Gel Liner ($16): Hands down one of our favorite products from the line. Jessica thought the “Ink” color gave her a more dramatic line than her everyday pencil, and it made it through two hot summer weddings without a single smudge. “I was really surprised by how well it stood up into the wee hours of the morning,” she says. “It’s the best eyeliner I’ve ever used.”

Kohl Pencil ($8) and Eye Crayon ($10): Liz and I tried these eyeliners in navy shades (“Bolt” and “Midnight,” respectively) that made our eyes pop. We both liked the texture and consistency, which glided on smoothly and didn’t scratch the eyelid.

Nails

Nail Polish ($10): There was a mixed reaction to Topshop’s polish. Jessica liked the colors but saw the paint start to chip after a day. Graphic Designer Sarah Philippart didn’t have a chipping problem, however, and thought it covered well with two coats. Bonus: Topshop has launched an exclusive stormy blue shade called “Windy City” at its Chicago store.

Packaging

We all swooned for the line’s whimsical black and white polka dots and stripes designs. “It’s so cute and distinctive,” says Liz. “This makeup would make a great gift for women of all ages.”

Verdict: For good quality, well-priced makeup, we give Topshop beauty a wholehearted BETTER!
