The Gardener’s Year: December Gifts

Every year I try to give presents that will help my gardening friends keep the faith that “spring is coming!”

Local garden centers are great for gift certificates.  Here are some additional ideas for those who want to give a gift to a gardener who is dreaming of spring:

The Book of Leaves: A Leaf-by-Leaf Guide to Six Hundred of the World’s Great TreesAllen J. Coombes, author, University of Chicago press—just published in November of 2010. Available on Amazon and local bookstores, lists at $55.  Be sure to write a note in the front of the book and date it!

A Gift Membership to the Chicago Botanic Garden.  One year for an individual $70, for a family $100.  The gift membership includes many benefits in addition to free parking, event invitations and discounts on classes.  Won’t your gardener love you every time he or she visits the garden in 2011?

The makings for a terrarium, including the container, special soil, mosses and tiny flowering plants?  Every breath will be a promise of spring to come.
