Give Damaged Hair New Life

With its combo of harsh outdoor weather and dry indoor heat, a long winter can ravage your hair.

Revive your tresses in time for spring with these treatments and products you can use at home, plus some that you should leave for the professionals.

At the Salon
Colorist Jennifer Morrison of Inspiration Salon in Winnetka recommends a Keratin Vanilla Bean Conditioning Mask to add shine and put protein back into your hair. This treatment is applied at the shampoo bowl and followed by 15 minutes under the dryer.

“L’Oreal Powerdose Sprays are great for highlighted, straightened or really dry hair,” says Jennifer. “Ask your colorist about the lighteners (bleach) they use. Silk Life, a new ammonia-free lightner, creates a protective shield around the conditioning agents during oxidation to prevent damage. So while your hair is getting brightened, it’s being conditioned as well.”

“The Keratin Treatment has proven to be the most effective way to condition and restructure the hair,” explains stylist Tony Kelly of Pascal Pour Elle Salon in Glencoe. A Keratin treatment puts protein directly into your hair and adds shine and movement, although at $150–$300, it’s a pricier procedure.

“As we enter warmer weather, cut your hair, even if it’s a trim,” Kelly suggests. “Get rid of the dead ends and maybe try a shorter style for spring.”

At Your Sink
Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask strengthens hair and improves texture. After shampooing, apply to your hair for 7-10 minutes and then rinse.

It’s A 10 products work with all hair types. If you’ve had a Keratin treatment at the salon, try It’s A 10 Miracle Leave In Plus Keratin to maintain your treatment.

Macadamia Natural Oil products nourish hair that’s been damaged by chemical styling. The website offers a sample package of the oil and repair masque for $7.95 plus free shipping, so you can try the line before you commit to a full size product.

If you use a blow dryer, curler or flat iron, always apply a styling product to prevent frying your locks. Kevin Murphy Body Guard Hydrating Lotion helps protect hair against heat damage.

On a budget? A small amount of olive or grapeseed oil will add moisture and shine to dry hair, says Morrison. Massage the oil into your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes, then shampoo and condition as usual.

Finally, Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker are fans of Emi-Jay Hair Ties, which won’t pull or leave a dent in your hair. Even better, a portion of Emi-Jay’s sales benefit Locks of Love.
