Northbrook Reforestation Project Celebrates 5 Years of Progress

Ready, set, green!

In an effort to restore land to its original state, Northbrook’s Society of the Divine Word reforested 40 acres of its property over the past five years. The Society held a ceremony in late July with an appearance from Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon to commemorate the project’s progress.

“Once, we farmed this land to support our mission work, but now that we no longer have the need to raise crops, we want to return this portion of our land to the condition we found it in 110 years ago,” says Rev. Quang Duc Dinh, one of six rectors in the Society’s Chicago province.

Society clergy and volunteers have planted 41,000 saplings so far, provided by the Department of Natural Resources and local nurseries. The Society plans to reforest over half of its 150 acres in the future.
