Preparing for Cycling

Proper cycling attire can greatly enhance your riding experience.  Here is a checklist for items that will help you to get the most out of the sport.

Helmet: Never leave for a ride without it, and make sure it sits correctly on your head and covers your forehead

Sunglasses: Not only ease strain on your eyes, but also protect from flying road debris and insects

Gloves: Cushion your palms to reduce numbness and increase comfort.  They also serve as a layer of protection in the event of a fall.

Padded cycling shorts: Worn next to the skin a synthetic chamois pad will allow you to feel more comfortable on your saddle.

Cycling jersey: A lightweight, breathable jersey will allow moisture to evaporate and cool your body

Water bottles: It’s not attire, but an essential piece of your cycling equipment.  Small changes in hydration status can affect performance and safety.  For rides longer than 90 minutes it is a good idea to carry some food as well, such as an energy bar or gel.

If cycling in cooler weather, add layers to keep you warm.  It is best to start a ride slightly cold, as you will quickly warm up.  Most important, protect your head, hands and feet; these areas get cold faster because they do not receive as much blood flow.
