The ‘Old Dolls’, the 2021 American Red Cross of Illinois Healthcare Hero Award recipients, are a group of nurses who have been working together at Northwestern Memorial Hospital since the 1980s. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, the group decided to continue their work in the Intensive Care Units despite the healthcare pandemic. Each of these nurses were given the option to transfer to other hospital departments with lower exposure risks. However, the group opted to remain together on the frontline of the pandemic, which included taking care of the sickest COVID-19 patients.
Every year, the American Red Cross of Illinois celebrates the everyday heroes in our communities and honors their acts of great bravery, dedication, and service through their Heroes Breakfast event. The occasion also serves as a way for the organization to highlight partnerships with corporate leaders, like Aon, that make their lifesaving mission possible. As the sponsor of the 2021 Healthcare Hero Award, Aon makes it possible for the Red Cross to be prepared to respond to more than 60,000 disasters nationwide.
