Making The Holidays Merrier For Seniors In Need

Nothing makes a holiday warmer at heart than helping someone who truly needs it. The North Shore Senior Center is offering up two such ways to make a difference.

The Giving Tree: If you’re a natural shopper, visit the North Shore Senior Center (161 Northfield Rd.) and choose a tag from the center’s Giving Tree, located in the atrium. Purchase the items listed, wrap ‘em up and bring them back to the center. Staff will distribute the items personally to the seniors that requested them. The items most useful and/or requested?

  • Postage stamps
  • Kosher snacks
  • Sweaters
  • Robes
  • Socks
  • Gloves
  • Blankets
  • Fruit baskets
  • Candy
  • Lotions and spa products
  • Dog food, toys and treats

The NSSC also says gift cards for Target, Kohl’s, Payless Shoes, Borders, Walmart, Dominick’s and gas stations are frequently requested items. (Suggested minimum gift is $25.)

It’s a great way to help, you’re probably shopping anyway, and if you get your kids involved, it’s a chance to teach them how to give of themselves during the holidays. If you have any questions, give the center’s Social Services department a call at 847-784-6040.

Food Drive: The center also sponsors a holiday food drive that benefits the New Trier Township and Northfield/Glenview food pantries. You’ll find a donation bin outside the Lifelong Learning office, and a collection box for cash donations at the A&A Café.
