Quick and Easy: Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter’s Urban Art Party

MAD-urban-art-partyShop early for the holidays at the second annual Urban Art Party.

What: Sample food from local vendors, taste craft beers, check out products from Chicago artists and dance the night away with DJ John San Juan while supporting the unreimbursed programs provided by Midwest CareCenter and Camp Care.

Where: MINI of W. Diversey Parkway, Chicago

When: Saturday, Nov. 2, 7 p.m. to midnight (shopping ends at 11 p.m.)

How: Twenty-five of Chicago’s hippest indie artisans are bringing their jewelry, glassware, stationery, prints, clothing and other goods for you to peruse. Participating artists include Bees Knees Foods, Chestnut & Scott, Gnome’s Whimsey, Naughty Betty, Lucius Jewelry, Tweedle Press and Zero Bird Studio.

Twenty percent of table sales from these vendors will benefit the Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter. Proceeds support unreimbursed therapies, programs and services.

The organization: Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter provides hospice and palliative (relief care from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness) care services to patients and their families in 150 communities. As a result, thousands of Chicago-area individuals and their families annually receive compassionate, high-quality care in the form of primary caregivers and night and weekend support. Caregivers collaborate with doctors on a treatment plan, administering exceptional care at home or in a hospital. Other services include music therapy, massage therapy, Reiki art therapy, pet therapy, therapeutic horticulture and special veterans outreach.

Midwest CareCenter covered more than $2 million in uncompensated costs related to patient and family care in 2012. With state-of-the-art facilities, innovative therapies based on the latest science, award-winning quality standards and recognition (Chief Medical Officer Martha Twaddle, MD, was recently named one of the 30 most influential leaders in hospice and palliative medicine in the nation), Midwest CareCenter is considered among the top tier of the nation’s hospice programs.

Each year, Midwest CareCenter hosts an annual summer grief support camp, CampCare, to facilitate the grieving process for kids. This camp helps children express their feelings of pain, isolation, depression, confusion, anger or resentment in a safe space, allowing those experiencing loss to still be kids.
