Terri Lorenz’s philanthropy has always centered around families and children.
In 2005, she and her husband, Tony, noticed that family summer gatherings in Wilmette tended to center on the lakefront, with little going on in their neighborhood farther west.
Wanting to provide summer entertainment that families could walk to, they started the annual Thornwood Park Concert, featuring several local bands under the slogan “bringing neighbors, nature and music together.”
The $5,000 event is funded by residents, and roughly 200 families attend each year. This year’s festival will be on July 10.
“It’s meant to be a simple experience that kids and families would enjoy,” Terri says. “It’s old-fashioned … like American pie.” Now, the whole community looks forward to it—especially Terri’s daughters, ages 8 and 10.
And Terri’s love of Thornwood Park goes beyond the festival. She and Tony raised $10,000 to enhance the Park District’s plan to reconstruct the park’s playground. The group also bought six new trees for the park.
Terri was also instrumental in the founding of the first fundraiser for The Maryville Crisis Nursery in Des Plaines, which provides temporary short-term care for children up to age 6, and she and Tony support Children’s Memorial Hospital Foundation, where Tony is a board member. Terri is also a Brownie troop leader—yet another way in which she brings her community together.
