Protect Your Hair During This Long, Cold Winter

“When it gets cold, everyone notices the changes in their skin—dry, cracked hands and peeling lips.”

“Just as you protect those areas with hand lotion and lip balm, so should you be protecting your hair,” says Andreas Hogue of Andreas Hogue Salon in Northbrook. “We definitely have seasonal ‘plans’ for our guests–recommendations to keep their hair its best no matter what the weather brings.”

Tips for great “Winter Hair” from Andreas Hogue Salon:

  1. Switch to a hydrating sulfate-free shampoo and a hydrating conditioner.
We recommend Pureology, Keratin Dose by Biolage, and Moroccan Oil Shampoo.
  2. Use cold water to rinse your hair. This instantly seals the cuticle layer of the hair and provides optimal shine.
  3. Use a leave-in conditioner (such as Pureology Color Fanatic) and a heat-resistant styling product (such as Total Results Heat Resist) before blow drying.
  4. Use the blow dryer on low- or no-heat setting to prevent over drying.
  5. Skip the hot rollers and curling iron and switch to non-heated velcro rollers for extra volume.
  6. Shampoo your hair at night so it has more time to air dry.
  7. Get your split ends trimmed regularly.
