“Aladdin” Soars at the Marriott Theatre

“Aladdin” is pure entertainment for children of all ages.

Based on the popular 1992 Disney movie, the production includes many of the film’s original songs, including the rousing “You’ve Never Had a Friend Like Me,” and “A Whole New World,” which for this reviewer, was worth the price of admission alone.

Bernie Yvon was hysterical as the wise cracking genie, who grants Aladdin 3 wishes after the young man discovers a magical lamp. Jameson Cooper and Christine Bunuan are appealing as Aladdin and Jasmine, two star-crossed lovers who discover the importance of being true to themselves, regardless of circumstances. Like the movie, Aladdin and Jasmine are surrounded by a cast of colorful characters, including the evil Jafar, portrayed with a dose of camp by Dieterich Gray, and the sweet yet somewhat clueless Sultan, portrayed by Roger Mueller.

Directed and choreographed by Matt Rafferty, the production moves quickly and effortlessly. Costume designer Nancy Missimi and set designer Rob Rahn have created an enchanting world, rich with color, textures and a fantastic flying carpet. Following the production, there is a Q&A session, which is a wonderful way to teach young audiences about the world of theater.

“Aladdin” runs through August 14, at the Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences, located at 10 Marriott Drive in Lincolnshire. For information about tickets and show times visit this or call the box office at 847-634-0200.
