Back-to-School Beauty

As a summer full of sultry North Shore beach days comes to a close, it’s back to school for the kids—yay! —and time to jump on the latest beauty and skin care products for fall.

Work the Runway Look

You may not be able to afford the clothes that graced the runway during NYC’s Fall Fashion Week, but you can emulate some of the latest makeup trends. The look for lips during Fashion Week featured rich chocolate or deep mulled wine, either in a creamy matte or high gloss. Try Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Volga ($25) or Rimmel Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick in Coffee Shimmer (less than $4 at drugstores).

Violet hues are also big this season. New for fall: Estee Lauder’s 2012 Limited Edition Pure Color Velvet Lipstick in Violet Crush or Black Cassis ($25).

Be Flawless (almost)

While a truly flawless face can only be achieved using Photoshop, a great, natural-looking foundation or tinted moisturizer can really make a difference. In colder months, go with a makeup that offers a wide array of shades for a near-perfect match and provides a combination of oil-free moisture, shine control and coverage.

New to try this season: Clinique Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup ($23)

Put it in Neutral

Using the fall foliage as inspiration, you can easily integrate the colors of autumn into your makeup regimen. These neutral, warm shades look great on any skin tone and work all year long.

Smashbox’s limited edition fall palettes in Muse and Icon ($39) offer six neutral shades (such as russet, truffle, sandstorm, roast and black currant) and come with a double-ended brush. According to Lori Taylor, global pro lead makeup artist for Smashbox, “This collection is really all you need to create your own unforgettable look that’s totally on trend for fall.”

Another perfect-for-fall collection is Bobbie Brown’s new Desert Twilight Eye Palette ($60) in eight shades of desert-inspired hues.

Use Smart Products

Back-to-school is the perfect time to try the latest in high-tech beauty. Here are two new products that might just make getting ready for work a little more fun.

Want to spend less time with your hair dryer? Goody’s new paddle brush with built-in sponge microfibers absorbs water as you detangle, before you blow, to minimize drying time and protect your hair. And, it’s less than $12 at drugstores.

For lips, Exude lipstick ($29), InStyle magazine’s top lipstick for 2012, is worth the splurge. The secret is a combination of hydration and staying power with a high-tech, patented applicator that dispenses the perfect amount of color – with a great minty scent, too.
