Depression: Additional Interventions Do Exist

Depression: Additional Interventions Do Exist

The World Health Organization has declared April 7, 2017, this year’s World Health Day to bring attention to a condition we all face at some point in life: depression. For some people, depression is a passing symptom that may last a few days or weeks and then be quickly overcome. However, for millions of others, depression can become a chronic condition that lingers throughout life.

Awareness presents opportunities to prevent and treat depression before it becomes chronic. Let’s take a moment to gain perspective and consider our own tendencies toward depression and happiness. Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings. Consider the negative but focus on the positive. Express gratitude daily. Are we staying active, eating well, communicating with family and friends, and participating in healthy self-reflection?

While many people battling depression are best treated with medication, there are additional interventions, such as exercise, nutritional supplementation, acupuncture and meditation, that all have clinically significant effects.

  • Acupuncture is verified to increase neurogenesis of brain cells in the hippocampus similarly to SSRI’s (commonly prescribed medication) but without potential side effects.
  • Strengthen Your Micronutrient Profile. SpectraCell Laboratories cites almost 40 studies showing the following functional nutrient deficiencies for those battling depression: Magnesium, Selenium, Chromium, Folate, B12, B6, B2, Vitamin D, Carnitine, Inositol, Biotin, Serine, Zinc, and a mix of Antioxidants.
  • Supplementing with Turmeric and Saffron has shown beneficial effects at elevating mood and reducing symptoms of both depression and anxiety.
  • Mindfulness and Transcendental Meditation practices have both shown documented reductions in depressive symptoms.
  • Movement and Strength Training: Resistance training, endurance exercise, yoga and T’ai Chi have all been shown to reduce depression symptoms.

There are ways to feel better, and you don’t have to figure it out yourself. We are here to help. If you are interested in acupuncture, micronutrient testing, or guidance in strengthening your health profile, contact our office to schedule an appointment today.
