On Saturday, April 16, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Ecuador. The event is said to be the largest disaster that Ecuador has seen in decades, according to BBC, with more than 600 people killed and thousands that are injured or still missing. The destruction is devastating, with hundreds of collapsed buildings and torn up roads and highways to name just a portion of the wreckage that will take years and billions of dollars to recover from. According to CNN, 10,000 soldier and 4,500 police officers have been dispatched to aid with rescues and recovery missions. A second earthquake of a 6.1 magnitude hit off the coast of Ecuador on Wednesday, April 20, instilling more fear in the people of Ecuador due to the potential threat of a tsunami that comes with it.
