Fall Fashion Trends: Splurge vs. Steal

Forget minimalism—this autumn, fashion keeps it fun with textures, patterns, prints and color.

Read on for five of our favorite fall trends, all at a variety of price points.

Faux Fur

From jackets to cardigan collars to stoles, faux fur gives any outfit a welcome pop of luxury.

Splurge: Alice + Olivia Short Fur Coat, $330, Saks Fifth Avenue

Steal: Faux Fur Shawl Collar Sweater, $79.50, New York & Co.

Color

The fall’s new black? Vibrant jewel tones. Opt for a solid, monochromatic look or mix and match rich hues for a color block effect. Colored tights and pants are also hot for autumn and make a fun alternative to jeans.

Splurge: New Tunis Dress, $385, Diane von Furstenburg

Steal: Halogen Seamed Pencil Skirt, $68, Nordstrom

Girly Dresses

We love that designers showed a sense of humor when it came to this season’s best dresses. With interesting color combinations and prints, plus whimsical details like sheer fabrics and puffed sleeves, fall’s feminine cuts are anything but prim. Taller gals can try the new mid-calf length with a round-toe pump or spectator bootie, but if you’re petite, don’t worry—there are plenty of knee-length options out there, too!

Splurge: Galena Embroidery Dress, $698, Marc by Marc Jacobs

Steal: Karl Lagerfeld for Impulse Puff Sleeve Floral Print Dress, $109, Macy’s

Chunky Sweaters

Who doesn’t love snuggling up in a cozy sweater when the temperatures start to drop? Balance out an oversized sweater with skinny jeans, or play with contrasting textures and pair nubby knits with leather or silk skirts.

Splurge: Alice + Olivia Avril Fair Isle Cardigan, $440, Nordstrom

Steal: Twisted Yarn Sweater, $79, Zara

Capes

For a stylish outerwear alternative before the subzero weather hits, don the season’s swingy cape. We especially dig pieces with interesting weaves or plaid patterns, another huge trend for fall. Just make sure to balance the proportion and wear with slim pants or a fitted pencil skirt.

Splurge: Rachel Zoe Ava Knit Cape, $450, Shopbop

Steal: Tinley Road Buckle Front Cape, $89, Piperlime
