“Goodnight Moon the Musical” Shines at Victory Gardens

Chicago Children’s Theatre’s new production, “Goodnight Moon the Musical” is anything but sleepy.

The play celebrates the magic and mayhem of childhood while bringing to life Margaret Wise Brown’s iconic bedtime story. Alex Goodrich charms as the nocturnal bunny, who, just can’t fall asleep no matter how hard he tries (which isn’t all that hard). Sara Sevigny is excellent as the nurturing “old lady,” who is both exasperated and amused by the young bunny’s antics. Rounding out the cast is Becky Poole as “mouse,” Bunny’s feisty sidekick, and Aaron Holland, who shows great range as he portrays a variety of different supporting characters.

Directed by David Kersnar, a founding member of Lookingglass Theatre’s ensemble, the production keeps kids and parents entertained with song, dance, and family-friendly humor. The vivid set, designed by Jacqueline and Richard Penrod, looks and feels just like the book but includes interactive features such as moving paintings, a joke-telling fireplace and a cow named Clara.

Chicago Children’s Theatre, in partnership with the Pajama Program, will collect new pajamas for local children in need throughout the show’s run. For every pair of new pajamas donated, Scholastic Books will donate an equal number of early learning books. Donation bins will be located in the lobby during each performance.

“Goodnight Moon the Musical” runs through December 23 at Victory Gardens Biograph Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago. Be sure to check the theater’s website for the dates of special Friday night “pajama party” performances that include milk and cookies following the play. Tickets are available online or at 773-871-3000. “Goodnight Moon the Musical” is recommended for children ages 3 and older.
