Movies that Make Chicago

Think you’ve seen it all when it comes to Chicago-based movies?

Sure, John Hughes and Vince Vaughn covered a lot of territory, but not all of it. Here are 5 great documentaries centered around Chicago and the northern ‘burbs:

You Weren’t There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977 – 1984

Music fans: When you think Chicago music, do your thoughts float to blues? Jazz? How about punk? Yep—the city had quite the punk scene in the late 70s, and this doc covers it nicely.

Don’t You Forget About Me (video, 2009)

Say what you will, but John Hughes defined a generation. Love the interviews. The doc is a little stalkerish, but it’s pretty cool to see so many recognizable places.

Floored (2009)

Take a deep look at high finance in Chicago as filmmakers follow the ups and downs of the lives of traders at the CBOE. Intense, gritty and just a little sad.

We Believe: Chicago and Its Cubs (2009)

White Sox fans need not apply. Someday, Cubbies. Someday.

Geoffrey Baer Tours: Chicago’s North Shore

Watch Chicago’s North Shore on PBS. See more from Geoffrey Baer Tours.

One of many of Baer’s videos of WTTW, this tour of the North Shore makes for a pleasant trip around our neighborhoods, offers historical perspective and even points out little known hidden gems.
