While the history surrounding the invention of iced tea is murky, Richard Blechynden is credited with popularizing it in America at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, according to TeaUSA.com.
Blechynden was the India Tea Commissioner, and at the fair, nobody would drink his tea hot because of the sweltering heat. When he had the idea to serve his tea cold, overheated fairgoers welcomed the refreshing beverage.
