Winter Fashion Faux Pas

Winter brings slush, sleet and, unfortunately, some poor fashion choices.

Just because we live in the Midwest and we’re susceptible to the erratic winter weather doesn’t mean we can’t look stylish. Below, our fashion no-no’s and resolutions.

Fashion don’t: wearing UGGs everywhere

Sure, they’re absolutely acceptable to wear when you’re running errands or going out casually, but forgo them when out to dinner on a Saturday night.

Instead: If you want to skip the high heels but still look stylish, try a funky moto boot or classic riding boot. They’re comfortable while still looking on trend. Looking for something with more warmth? Try these winter boots that won’t cramp your snow style.

Fashion don’t: nude tights, period.

Sandals or open-toed shoes with tights aren’t a match either. The look will instantly age you.

Instead: Wear opaque black tights or alternatively patterned, textured or lacy ones. If you’re wearing a shorter skirt with tights, stay away from knee-high boots as they’ll cut off the legs. Instead, pair the tights with booties or heels so the full pattern can be seen.

Fashion don’t: carrying your roomy, everyday purse to a holiday gala, fundraiser or winter wedding

Even if it’s a high-end designer label handbag, it’s unacceptable for evening wear. The look is sloppy and takes away from your outfit.

Instead: Carry a glittery clutch or small handbag in a rich fabric like velvet or satin. Stud or bow detailing is also popular this season and adds extra pizzazz to an evening bag.

Fashion don’t: mixing seasons

Skip the baseball caps, thin gauzy fabrics, or crochet knits.

Instead: Wear a fitted beanie or chunky knit hat and bundle up with lots of layers. Capes are in right now and look chic. Sample the preppy look by layering your favorite denim or flannel shirt under a sweatshirt or sweater. Let the lapels and bottom of the shirts peek out.
