Headlands Center for the Arts’ Auction Exceeds Fundraising Goal to Support Local Artists

Headlands Center for the Arts, housed in several repurposed military buildings in the Marin Headlands, held its annual art auction and fundraiser with a goal of raising $500,000 — which it exceeded by $180,000. Funds raised will support the center’s multidisciplinary artist programs ranging from visual arts to music, dance, videography and creative storytelling.

The virtual event, held June 2, was streamed live from the David Ireland House in San Francisco and featured a dynamic program developed in collaboration with Fog Beast, a Bay Area dance-based live-art organization directed by Melecio Estrella and Andrew Ward. It included performances both previously filmed on location at Headlands and streamed live during the event.

June 2 also kicked off the launch of the organization’s two-week art auction, beginning with a live paddle raise on the night of the event and continuing online until June 16. The auction featured more than 75 artworks by internationally-recognized artists, and was hosted by Headlands Executive Director Mari Robles and Director of Fine Arts at Bonhams San Francisco, Aaron Bastian. Artists participating in the live and silent auction events received up to 50% commission on the sale of their work — with Headlands returning more than $125,000 back to the artists.

The works created at the center have been internationally recognized and featured in museum, galleries, theaters, bookshelves and public spaces around the world. The center is open to the public for tours.

The Headlands Center for the Arts 2021 Auction committee was co-chaired by Melissa Barber, Lizelle Green, Jessica Silverman and Evie Simon. Event sponsors included CompassSeiler LLP,  JP Morgan Private Bank and Marine Layer.
