6 Lesser-Known Beauty Rules to Live By at Every Age

6 Beauty Rules to Live By, Regardless of Age

By now you know all the age-old, never-to-be-broken beauty rules like always wear sunscreen and always remove your makeup before bed. But there are some lesser-known beauty tips, tricks, and techniques that really should be added to that universally followed list of beauty commandments. If these six habits aren’t part of your beauty routine yet, you’re going to want to add them, STAT!

1. Take a polish pause

While nail polish looks pretty, it’s best to occasionally forgo color. Consider switching to no polish every couple manicures. “Polish can often cause your nails to turn yellow, peel, or dry up,” says Margaret Dabbs, founder of Margaret Dabbs London. Celebrity manicurist and founder of JINsoon Nail Polish Jin Soon Choi agrees. “[Wearing polish for weeks] has nearly the same effect as using gel: It’s going to dry out your nails,” she says. “When you remove nail polish that’s been left on too long, you’ll often see white spots, which means your nails are too dry.” Choi suggests removing your polish when it starts chipping and applying the same rules for manicures and pedicures.

2. Brush it off

beauty rules: dry brushing

Dry brushing exfoliates dry skin, increases blood circulation, promotes lymph flow/drainage and reduces the appearance of cellulite (now do I have your attention?). Even better, at around 10 bucks for a dry brush, it’s an inexpensive habit to tack on to your routine. Prior to stepping into the shower or bath, begin brushing in circular motions starting at your feet and working upward toward your heart. Don’t use too much pressure; you don’t want to scratch your skin. You can spend anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes brushing. Try to dry brush twice a week and aim for the morning versus evening as dry brushing is known to energize.

3. Pack a powerful product punch

beauty rules: serums

Ask any beauty expert about their must-have products and chances are a serum will top their list. Because they’re made up of smaller molecules, serums penetrate deeper into the skin to deliver a high concentration of active ingredients, really allowing the ingredients to target any skincare concerns you may have. While some serums are pricey, they will last you months since you only need a few drops per application — trust us, these bad boys are potent. Apply your serum after cleansing but before moisturizing and sunscreen. You can use a serum both morning and night.

4. Soothe stripped strands

beauty rules: hair masks

Kim Avino, seasoned colorist at Pascal Pour Elle, often sees hair that is dry from the weather or damaged from heat. To combat this, use a conditioning treatment or mask once a week. After washing your hair, Avino suggests toweling hair dry, applying the treatment, and then wearing a shower cap for 30 minutes to let the mask penetrate. You can also lay a towel on your pillow and keep the treatment on hair overnight. Kerastase makes a slew of fantastic masks for all hair types.

5. Don’t put your neck on the line

beauty rules: care for your neck

Before you say, “I’m too young to use a neck cream,” know that neck skin is thinner than facial skin, often showing age more quickly. Experts recommend beginning to use a neck cream as early as in your 30s. According to dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman, neck skin is thinner and more prone to wrinkling. “When you don’t have a thick dermis, there isn’t as much collagen in the skin, and all the support to keep it from wrinkling,” explains Engelman. Apply your neck cream following your moisturizer. We like Clarins Extra‑Firming Neck Anti‑Wrinkle Rejuvenating Cream or DoNotAge with drbrandt moisturizing neck cream.

6. Be a brow boss

beauty rules: eyebrows

The most instant way to “wake up” your face is to fill in your eyebrows. Women forget to pay attention to their brows, which truly frame the face. For best results, have a pro trim and shape your brows every few weeks. If you have sparse brows, fill them in using a fool-proof kit like the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Kit. For on-the-go touch-ups, Bobbi Brown’s brow gel, a customer favorite, comes in clear, though we’re partial to the tinted shades for gorgeously defined brows.

Now that we’ve given you six more foolproof hacks to add to your beauty routine, fine-tune it further by making sure you’re not guilty of practicing any of these bad beauty habits.

One more beauty habit that’s always in style? Minimizing waste and helping other women in need by always donating or recycling used or unwanted beauty products rather than chucking them in the trash. Here’s our handy guide on how and where to do just that.
