A holiday classic comes to life in the Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences’ new performance of “The Nutcracker.”
The beloved tale has been transformed into a family-friendly musical comedy that is both sweet and sincere while also being laugh-out-loud funny. It’s the perfect entrée for young theatergoers who will fall in love with the classic story of faith, friendship and holiday magic.
Like most performances at the Marriott Theatre, the play is brilliantly executed. Matt Raftery both directed and choreographed the production, which is quite a feat as the dance sequences cover a slew of different styles, including classic ballet (with a nod to Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite”), tap, jazz and modern dance. Artistic directors Andy Hiteand Aaron Thielen create a warm and dynamic setting through the use of large-screen LED’s that are hung along the periphery of the theatre-in-the-round stage.
However, it’s the ensemble’s stellar performances that really make the show special. Dara Cameron is lovely as Marie, and her enthusiasm for helping her friends and believing in dreams is infectious. George Keating is hilarious as the egotistical Mouse King, who, along with bumbling rodents Joe (Stephen Shellhardt) and Schmo (Norm Boucher), sets out to steal the magic crown.Devin DeSantis plays the dashing Nutcracker to perfection and Clara’s (Lauren Blane) final ballet sequence is nothing short of remarkable.
The show runs about 60 minutes, which is perfect for the young audience (kids ranged in age from about 2 to 10). I attended the show with my sister and her 4-year-old daughter, both of whom gave the show a double thumbs up.
The holidays can be a busy time filled with countless holiday events and entertainment options, but this show should certainly be on your must-see list. It is joyful, entertaining and full of holiday cheer.
The Nutcracker runs through December 28 at the Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences, 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire. For information about tickets and show times visit the theatre’s websiteor call the box office at 847-634-0200.
