June Movies: Best Baseball Flicks

Everyone’s got an opinion on this one, so there’s no safe answer.

Instead, we’re giving you five favorites to put in your Netflix queue, for the next time the game is rained out and you need a fix.

The Natural (PG, 1984)
Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close

Sure, Robert looks stunning when the sunlight is just right, but in the end, it’s about heartbreak, healing and believing the unbelievable. It’s how I get through the Cubs season every year.

Bang the Drum Slowly (PG, 1973)
Robert DeNiro, Michael Moriarty

Tear jerker alert. Get the tissues out for this story about a star pitcher watching out for the team’s catcher, while keeping his friend’s illness a secret.

Field of Dreams (PG, 1989)
Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones

Costner is the king of baseball flicks, and there are many who argue “Bull Durham” was his best, but if you like your movie on the ever-so-sweet redemption side, this is the one for you.

A League of Their Own (PG, 1992)
Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna

“There’s no crying in baseball!” ‘Nuff said.

Bad News Bears (PG, 1976)
Walter Matthau, Tatum O’Neal

A classic, bringing back memories of movies at the drive-in. Everyone loves a Buttermaker, and Kelly Lee? Total badass.
