You wouldn’t think that something as irreverent and flip as Second City could possibly be hitting the creaky age of 50, but in December, they will hit the big 5-0 and plan to celebrate with a festival of funny.
The main show, featuring acclaimed alumni like Harold Ramis and Martin Short (to learn about alumni from the North Shore, click here), sold out in minutes, but there’s still lots of interesting programming for comedy lovers. On Saturday, Dec. 12, several panel discussions still have tickets available including ones on: The Colbert Report, Second City TV and an interview with David Shepherd. Also coming in December: Taming of the Flu, the new Mainstage review. Tickets ($20 or $25) are on sale now for performance dates beginning Dec. 6. The show’s tag line: “We’re sick of the flu, sick of the health care system and sick of the cameras catching us running the red lights.”
If you don’t want to travel downtown to celebrate the big 5-0 with Second City, they’re coming to the suburbs. You can catch “Second City Lampoons New Trier.” The performance is on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Gaffney Auditorium on the Winnetka campus. Tickets just went on sale through New Trier’s Booster Club. The performance will feature sketches about New Trier—satire about North Shore parents and students, hard to imagine—as well as some of the best sketches from Second City’s 50 years.
