UNICEF Chicago Humanitarian Awards Luncheon
October 4, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
What: On Thursday, Oct. 4, The Midwest Regional Office of UNICEF USA will host its eighth annual UNICEF Chicago Humanitarian Awards Luncheon to honor extraordinary leaders who are contributing locally and internationally to the improvement of children’s lives.
This year’s recipients are Dr. Colleen Cicchetti, Executive Director of the Center for Childhood Resilience at Lurie Children’s Hospital, and Phyllis Glink, Executive Director of the Irving Harris Foundation. They will be honored for their work in ensuring that children have access to proper nutrition, mental health programming, protective environments and opportunities to play.
The luncheon theme, #EatPlayLove, will focus on early childhood development. During the first few years of a child’s life, brain cells can make up to 1,000 new connections every second – a once-in-a-lifetime speed. These connections contribute to children’s brain function and learning and lay the foundation for their future health and happiness. Nurturing care – which includes adequate nutrition, stimulation, love and protection from stress and violence – is critical to the development of these connections.
Why: UNICEF USA wants all children to have a happy, healthy childhood regardless of location. UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories to put children first and has helped save more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization.
