Festive Frocks: What to Wear This Year

The onslaught of holiday parties has begun. In addition to your own home or office shindig, you probably have a roster of random fetes to attend.

But what is a social butterfly to wear for all this wassailing?

This year, it’s about metallics, sparkle and texture. Inject color with your accessories, but instead of going with traditional red and green, try other rich hues like teal, eggplant, or fuschia.

For the Book Club Bash

When you’re heading out for a night with the girls, you want to be stylish and festive but not too fussy. Try a tuxedo pant and a sweater with some shimmer. Teal patent pumps and a whimsical ring give you an extra pop of color and spark.

For Your Sweetie’s Office Soiree

You’ll want to dress up a little for your significant other’s party but not look overly flashy. A pretty party dress fits the bill. We love how this tweed achieves its luster using metallic thread: It’s a bit subtler than a dress covered in sequins, but still allows you to shine. Go barelegged or wear with patterned tights for a more casual look, and finish things off with statement earrings and a bag with some color.

New Years Tweed Dress, $268, Anthropologie

Short Knitted Cardigan, $79.90, Zara

Flowerdrop Earring, $59.50, Banana Republic

Inge Christopher Clutch, $148, Lori’s Shoes

Sam Edelman Yesenia Pump, on sale for $119.90, Lori’s Shoes

For the Kids’ and Classroom Parties

For parties that could involve lots of running around and sticky candy cane fingers, comfort and ease are key. Pair a jewel-toned, sequined cami or long-sleeve tee with a nubby cardigan and dark jeans. And while you needn’t kill yourself in killer heels, you can still have fun with your kicks. Go for a flat shoe with some embellishment and a jeweled cuff to add some glitz.

This look is easy to dress up for other functions, too. Just swap out the denim for tuxedo pants, the flats for heels, and throw on sparkly earrings or a necklace.

Matchstick Jean, $98, J. Crew

Women’s Knit Wrap Tunic, $39.50, Old Navy

ELLE Embellished Tank, $16.99, Kohl’s
