Organic Clothing

Once upon a time, “eco-friendly fashion” conjured up images of drab, baggy garments hanging at the back of health food stores. No longer.

Nowadays, you can find everything from tailored jackets to workout wear made from sustainable fabrics. In time for Earth Day on April 22, we’ve rounded up our favorite organic pieces that look fab for spring. Sometimes being green is easy.

Remember that most organic and natural fabrics are delicate, so many manufacturers recommend washing in cold water either by hand or on a low cycle and line drying. To continue earth friendly practices, try to reduce your trips to the dry cleaners, which use harsh, toxic chemicals, and invest in an energy efficient washing machine that uses less water and will save you money in the long run.

The New Denim

Made from 98% organic cotton and a hint of stretch, these jeans (seen above) have a slightly higher waist and wider boot cut flare so you can reference the 1970s without actually traveling back to them.

Harmony Samudra Jean, $138, Loomstate

The New Basic

With its simple but striking design, drawstring sides that adjust the hem and soft hemp-cotton blend, you’ll live in this cargo skirt this summer.

Adjustable Utility Skirt, $178, Stewart + Brown

The New Color

Who says green clothing has to be beige? We love the brilliant blue hue of this dress made from 100% organic cotton. Elegant dolman sleeves balance a shorter hem, which can be worn with tights until the temperatures start to climb; then flash those lovely legs.

The New It Bag

In addition to designing fabulously chic, limited edition bags made from certified sustainable fabrics, Gunas donates a portion of each sale to charity. They are currently partnered with Earth Matters Foundation and support efforts to save tigers and other wildlife around the world.

The New Steal

On April 14, H&M launches its “Conscious Collection” for men, women and kids. The dresses, tees, pants and jackets made from organic and recycled fabrics are as easy and breezy as a summer’s day and very affordable. Natalie Portman even wore a dress from the collection to Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party.
