Since its opening in 1964, the legendary The Kahala Hotel & Resort is an oceanfront luxury destination property renowned for its gracious Hawaiian hospitality and lush surroundings. Here at the resort, we share the belief that it is our kuleana (responsibility) to do everything we can to serve as good stewards of our environment in order to move toward a sustainable future. We are deeply committed to preserving Oahu’s land, ocean, and culture for generations to come. So, together with the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative, a nonprofit organization, we created the Kahala Initiative for Sustainability, Culture and the Arts (KISCA).
Our goal is to plant 200,000 endemic Legacy Trees in Malaekahana on the North Shore of Oahu. This strategic partnership, titled The Kahala Reforestation Initiative, serves as a first for HLRI on the island of Oahu and marks a major milestone in its overall goal of planting 1.3 million native trees throughout Hawaii.
To support the initiative, The Kahala Hotel & Resort will apply an optional daily fee of $8 plus tax for guests that will go toward an overall reforestation fund. For every $60 collected, an endemic Hawaiian tree will be planted in the Kahala Legacy Forest located at the Gunstock Ranch in Malaekahana on the North Shore of Oahu. Guests have the option of donating the full $60 amount to purchase a tree, and they will receive a special certificate that includes global positioning system coordinates, which can be used to track the exact location of their tree online.
