Cool Jackets for a Warm Summer

Balmy weather is finally here, but don’t let it trick you.

Sometimes the warmth only last as a long as the daylight, making evenings chilly and sometimes damp. There’s also the surprise of walking into a restaurant that feels like an icebox—the air conditioning blasting so strongly that your napkin could fly off the table.

Whether it’s a night on the lawn at Ravinia or an afternoon brunch in town, we want to prepare you for summer’s cooler moments. These lightweight jackets will keep you comfortable as the warmth vacillates the next few months.

Cropped Peacoat
So tailored and bright, this pop of color is a great companion for any outfit. The jacket can even be incorporated into your wardrobe like a suit coat paired with a silky blouse and a straight-legged pant for some nighttime al fresco dining. Burberry Brit Mountford coat, $650, Bloomingdales

Cotton Safari Jacket
This jacket harkens back to what Banana Republic used to be all about—safari apparel galore. Cinched at the waist by its belt, we think it would look super flattering with a knee-length khaki pencil skirt and some wedges. Heritage belted safari jacket, $150, Banana Republic

Linen Blazer
Dressed down with a pair of jeans or more formally with a flowing skirt, you really can’t go wrong with this summer take on a well-structured blazer. We love the bias-striped ribbon and the partial lining on J.Crew’s version—it’s all about the details! Collection Schoolboy Blazer in tipped linen, $248, J.Crew

Classic Denim Jacket

The denim jacket is back. Levi’s made the first of its kind back in 1969 and is still producing them, only with an updated silm and cropped silhouette. Perfect with a sundress or white pants, this jacket is a closet staple. Just promise us you won’t wear it with a pair of similarly washed jeans. After all, the denim tuxedo was never fashionable. Authentic Trucker jacket, $98, Levi’s

Nylon Windbreaker

A few drops of rain in the forecast? This coat will come to the rescue. With its zip-out hood in the collar and resilient fabric, Michael Kors designed a practical and beautiful piece. We also like the khaki trim and gold zippers, which make it stand out from the usual sports windbreaker. MICHAEL by Michael Kors zip-front softshell jacket, $118, Nordstrom
