Here we go again … it’s the beginning of a new year, which means resolutions all around, especially for homeowners.
It’s not just about losing weight or eating healthy…some people resolve to finally paint that bedroom or get those window treatments done. Lofty goals, yes, but that’s what a new year is about after all.
How and when you start are probably the biggest questions to ask before delving into a major renovation. As a designer, I implore clients to work in the “off season” to better meet their expectations and hopefully run into fewer obstacles. But as a homeowner, when I want something done, I want it done now. So, follow this timeline to devise a plan that you can stick to when undertaking these pricy projects.
January-March: Small projects like painting, window treatments and new carpeting
April-August: Big projects like ordering rooms of furniture or gutting a space like a kitchen or bath
September-December: Expect delays in both product and labor. “Rush” charges might be charged if trying to meet a deadline.
Why are these projects best in these time slots? Two words: price and efficiency. Mary Bolts, Creative Director of CAI, a showroom at the Merchandise Mart says, “We have been lucky that most of our vendors haven’t raised pricing due to the economy.” Especially because prices typically rise in January when fix-it resolutions are in full swing.
Let’s say you want to get the family room outfitted with some new furniture. Bolt says summer is the best time to order with the fastest turnaround. And what about new window treatments? First quarter is your best bet, says Debby Keelan of Keelan Kreations in Inverness.
Her busy season is late summer right up to Christmas when people rush to get windows dressed before holiday parties. Her turnaround is roughly four weeks once she receives the fabric. For larger scale projects like remodeling a kitchen, clients should expect about 6-8 weeks.
Maureen O’Neill from Abruzzo Kitchens in Schaumburg says, “The key to a timely remodel is having any decisions made regarding material selections and product ordered so not to hold up installation.”
Because of this, it’s important to have a plan and know what you want before tackling anything else. These goals will help your remodel take off, stress-free (well almost).

Be decisive and get things ordered. The ability to keep things moving falls equally on the client as it does the production team – which most people rarely take into consideration. One thing all experts agree on is that most suppliers aren’t stocking nearly as much as they used to, due to the economy. So form a plan and keep your eye on the prize as you remodel the home of your dreams!
