Hot Dog! Weiner Winners in Glenview

Hot dogs are so yesterday. Now gourmet sausages are the thing.

Luckily, we’ve got a great place to experiment with the exotic flavors right in our own backyard. At Glenview’s fRedhots and Fries, you can nibble on wild game sausage or a smoked salmon dog while your kids scarf down their classic Vienna beefs. But you might want to hold the mustard on that salmon. Bring on the wasabi aioli and fries.

At Fredhots, “hot dog” and “gourmet” are no longer oxymorons. Depending on the day, weiner choices include:

  • Alligator
  • Boar
  • Elk
  • Rabbit
  • Buffalo
  • Antelope

Chef Fred Markoff and his wife Sharon have developed a niche with unusual sausages, most of which they procure from local sources. They roast their own Italian beef and serve fresh-cut fries Belgian-style in conical containers or slathered with garlic butter. The aioli dips include garlic, wasabi, chipotle, artichoke, pesto, red banana pepper and flavors-of-the-day ranging from curry to horseradish Dijon to green habanero. Ole!

A family of four can eat for as little as $25. So forget the ball game–celebrate National Hot Dog Month in July with traditional dogs or fancy sausages that live up to the name.
