A successful but lonely writer, Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) hears that her high school boyfriend is getting married and returns to her hometown to steal him back and relive her glory days in this funny film, written by Chicago’s own Diablo Cody, who stole our hearts with “Juno.”


My Week With Marilyn

Pop open a bottle of wine and let Michelle Williams sweep you away into the life of Marilyn Monroe. Colin Clark, an employee of Laurence Olivier’s, documents the tense interaction between Olivier and Monroe during production of “The Prince and the Showgirl.” Kenneth Branagh plays Laurence Olivier.


The Muppets

Watch it with: Your young son or daughter

With the help of three fans, The Muppets reunite to save their old theater from a greedy oil tycoon. Amy Adams and Jason Segel star in this adorable, funny film that’s equally fun for adults and kids. If you have young kids, you may want to own this one (and the soundtrack, too, for all your sing-along needs).


Carnage

Two pairs of parents hold a meeting after their sons are involved in a fight, but increasingly childish behavior throws the evening into chaos in this Polanski-directed film based on Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning play, “God of Carnage” (which lit up Goodman Theatre last year). The cast is star-studded: Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet and John C. Reilly.


Louder Than a Bomb

This inspiring documentary follows the fortunes of four Chicago-area high school poetry teams as they prepare for and compete in the world’s largest youth poetry slam. If you’ve never experienced slam poetry before, you’re in for a treat: It’s captivating, and you’ll be wowed by the passions and talents of the kids in this emotional film, which earned awards from numerous film festivals around the country.
