Exploring Evanston

Within Evanston’s 8 square miles, there lies historic shopping districts, a picturesque downtown and unique dining experiences.

You can find anything, from beaches and festivals to an art center and vegetarian café, all tucked into this vibrant community.

1. When Northwestern University was founded 160 years ago, the first class had 10 students. Now the Big Ten school boasts an enrollment of more than 19,000. Autumn afternoons are perfect for watching a Wildcat football game at Ryan Field or walking through the 96-year-old Shakespeare Garden, just north of the Frank W. Howes Memorial Chapel on campus.

Owned by the Vetter family for more than four decades, siblings Greg and Gretchen now run the bakery, which is famous for its delectable Florentines. Patrons also enjoy the smiley cookies, tasty donuts and a variety of fruit tarts.
