On the third Monday in January, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the influential civil rights leader. Here are some ways you can celebrate his legacy in Chicago with your family.
1. Read a book together
NPR’s GPB Media complied a great list of picture books for children that will help them learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement.
2. Attend a commemoration celebration
If you have older children, the University of Chicago will honor Martin Luther King Jr. during a commemoration celebration with Rev. Dr. William J. Barber and Sherrilyn Ifill on Jan. 15.
3. Volunteer in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy
Bring the family to The Volunteer Center’s Day of Service on Jan. 21 at the Winnetka Community House. You can drop in between 1- 4 p.m. and give back to local nonprofits by making blankets for the homeless, dog toys for shelter pets, cards for veterans, and more.
4. Listen to his speeches at a MLK Tribute Concert
Between Jan. 20-21, the Chicago Sinfonietta concert will include a performance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches.
5. Attend one of the family-friendly events being held at local museums
On Jan. 21, stop by the DuSable Museum of African American History for King Day, their annual family day. The program will have music, crafts, and performances in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Chicago Children’s Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago History Museum, and Museum of Science and Industry are also holding family friendly events. Chicago Parent has all the details.
