Counting Blessings: Things You Can Do to Give Thanks

Somewhere sandwiched between sick kids and soccer schedules, there’s been a lot to be thankful for this season. And as we gather together with family and friends, it’s easy to get caught up in the holiday whirlwind. Here’s a few ways to enjoy and make the most of the holiday.

To Give

Hunger is at a 14-year high in the U.S. right now, and there’s no better time than Thanksgiving to feed not only our own families but also others in need.

Family to Family Thanksgiving Drive

Good News Partners, 1600 Jonquil Terrace, Chicago
10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Grab a laundry basket and fill it with your holiday favorites – suggested items include large canned hams and other canned goods such as soups, green beans, tuna, fruits, peanut butter, rice, pasta and pasta sauces, Pop Tarts, cereals and cookies. Kids can also decorate a card or paint a picture and wish them well (just don’t sign last names or addresses).

This program is in partnership with The Volunteer Center of New Trier Township and supports families in need in the North of Howard community. If you’d like more information, visit The Volunteer Center’s Web site.

Northfield Township Food Pantry

3801 West Lake Ave., Glenview
Donations accepted prior to or by November 25
For more information, call 847-724-8300

The Food Pantry accepts both perishable and non-perishable items for Thanksgiving dinner availability to local families in need. Especially popular is the donation of Jewel and Dominick’s grocery store cards, so that families can do their own shopping. Food items especially in need include: drinks, potatoes and mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, Spaghettios and canned ravioli.
