Homeopathic Preventatives: Cure what ails you…naturally!

Cold and flu season is here. And Mibs is trying to keep their family healthy. The following are homeopathic preventatives and remedies that the Kitchen Cabinet, our family living experts, highly recommend:
Preventives—to build your immunity

Garlic: The Greek Olympian athletes ate a clove a day to keep illness away. Garlic is not only a preventative but also aids in a rapid recovery. If you are not daring enough to chow down a daily raw clove, then chop it and add it to sauces and dressings. Roast it and spread it on crusty bread. If all else fails, coat it in peanut butter and swallow to avoid garlic breath.

Emergen-C:
Packed with 1,000 mg of vitamin C, this “super energy booster” contains 32 mineral complexes and B vitamins. Scare away the bacteria! This packs a punch.

Juice +: Moms can stop nagging: “eat all your fruits and veggies.” Seventeen vegetables, fruits and grains can be swallowed in one gulp, and for kids, gummies and chewable are available. We all know how important it is to eat fruits and vegetables, but sometimes we need help making sure we get all the nutrients our bodies need to stay healthy. To buy online, click here.

Medicinal mushrooms:
Not what you may remember from the ’70s! Various fleshy or dried fungi such as shiitake, maitake, reishi, portobello, reishi, crimini, oyster and turkey tail will help build immunity when taken daily. Throw some mushrooms in your salads, soups and sauces, or look for supplements at your local health food store.

Astragalus: Are you sick of catching every bug your kids bring home to visit? Astragalus is a perennial plant native to northern and eastern China that is used in traditional Chinese medicine to build immunity. For best results, start taking astragalus daily in extract or capsule form early in the season and continue throughout.

Remedies – to cure your ills

Olive-leaf extract: From the early 1800s, people were using extract from parts of the olive tree to cure malaria. Now you can purchase this natural alternative remedy that acts as an anti-inflammatory, infection-fighting superhero. It aids in the treatment of common colds, flu and sore throats. To use, just put a few drops in warm water, gargle, and then spit out.

Echinacea: The Native Americans used it for snakebites. This powerhouse of an herb was used for all internal and external infections. Today Echinacea is available in extract or capsule form. This remedy will boost your immune system and reduce the length of sickness.

Elderberry: Don’t confuse this with preserves or wine—they won’t work!
But a black elderberry syrup will short-circuit flu symptoms. You can purchase this at health stores and follow package directions. A plus: It’s delish!

Ginger: Eating gingersnaps will not help your cold, but ginger root will. Peel the ginger and place it in a boiling pot of water, simmer for 20 minutes, pour into a mug and add honey and lemon to taste. This is the perfect cup of liquid for clearing congestion and warming your soul.

Eucalyptus oil: Clear your sinuses with the bracing and fragrant scent of eucalyptus. Fill a large bowl with hot water, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil, cover your head and the bowl with a towel, and breathe it in. Don’t get too close! Another option is to hang a fresh branch of eucalyptus on your showerhead; the hot water will release the natural oils.

Oscillococcinum: Much like a vaccine, oscillococcinum releases a small portion of a substance that can cause flu symptoms; in return, your body fights the infection faster. At the onset of flu symptoms, start taking oscillo and follow package directions. Find it in your natural foods store in the homeopathic section.
