Officer Jennifer Maddox of Chicago is a 26-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department as well as the 2022 Red Cross Law Enforcement Hero Award recipient. Working on the south side of Chicago as a police officer, Officer Maddox developed a strong bond with the community and noticed that so many children were fearful to go outside and did not have a safe space where they could be kids. In 2011, Officer Maddox started Future Ties, to provide a welcoming place for children to gather and get off the streets. Future Ties provides homework help and after school activities five days per week for elementary school students, as well as a summer camp when school is not in session. They also recently launched an after-school program for middle and high school students that has many of the same components as the elementary school program. During the pandemic, when parents’ resources were extremely challenged, the Future Ties organization offered e-learning opportunities, meals and other services to young people.
The American Red Cross of Illinois celebrates the everyday heroes in our communities and honors their acts of great bravery, dedication, and service through their annual Heroes Breakfast event. The event also serves as a way for the organization to highlight partnerships with corporations like the Motorola Solutions Foundation that make the lifesaving mission possible. As the sponsor of the 2022 Law Enforcement Award, the Motorola Solutions Foundation makes it possible for the Red Cross to be prepared to respond to more than 60,000 disasters nationwide.
Motorola Solutions Foundation’s strategic grants and global volunteerism programs are primarily focused on supporting community heroes, especially the first responder community. In 2022, the Foundation granted $4.7M USD to support first responders who stand on the front lines via programs that provide mental wellness and stress management training, scholarships to families of fallen first responders and safety preparedness to schools. In addition to this, the Foundation also provided several leadership development opportunities for underrepresented populations in public safety.
In 2022, Motorola Solutions employees worldwide generously volunteered their time in support of community heroes with organizations like the American Red Cross, schools and youth-serving organizations, as well as organizations that support front-line healthcare professionals. Whether it was donating blood, inspecting and installing fire alarms for community members, packing disaster relief kits, writing encouraging letters to veterans and their families, or mentoring students, Motorolans have dedicated more than 75,000 hours to volunteer service in 2022. Supporting heroes in their communities around the world is something they are incredibly proud of, and will continue to focus on in 2023.
