Quick and Easy: Red Carpet on the Green Fashion Show

MAD-spirit-of-67The Spirit of 67, a nonprofit fundraiser for Lake Forest School District 67, has come a long way from its roots.

Prior to the formation of the Spirit of 67, the Association of Parents and Teachers (APT) raised funds through sales of spirit wear and baked goods, hounding parents in gymnasiums and crowded cafeterias with brownies, plants, school bags and sweatshirts.

The reinvention of fundraising in Lake Forest has been swift, with the abandonment of bake sales and school colors in favor of more mature special events. This year, the Spirit of 67 has paired with the Lake Forest Chamber of Commerce to host its first Red Carpet on the Green Event, a fashion show to benefit the foundation. This free event, in conjunction with a three-day shopping partnership with local retailers and Market House Restaurant, is a testament to the innovative way the Spirit of 67 is financing the district’s educational improvements.

What: Sixteen local retailers, including J. McLaughlin, Lake Forest Shop, OSKA and Sara Campbell, will be showcasing the latest in women’s fashion. More than 40 local volunteer models affiliated with school district 67 will be modeling fall’s hottest trends, from casual to formalwear and every chic style in between.

Where: Market Square, Lake Forest

When: Thursday, Sept. 12, 1-2:30 p.m., rain or shine

How: Shop at participating stores September 12–14 and mention the Spirit of 67. Ten percent of the proceeds from your sale will benefit Spirit of 67. For more information or to see a complete list of participating retailers online, or call 847-234-4282.

The organization: Founded in 1985 as a not-for-profit fundraiser for the Association of Parents and Teachers (APT) of Lake Forest School District 67, the Spirit of 67 Foundation provides funding for technology, curriculum enhancements and resources for elementary and middle school students. Through donations from community partners, fundraising events and a successful general membership campaign, the foundation awarded nearly $3 million in 370 grants to local schools, furnishing classrooms with state-of-the-art technology and enhancing fine arts and athletic departments.

Other annual special events include the Opening Doors for Education Home Tour, Family Baseball Night and the Centerpieces of Education Benefit Luncheon and silent auction. The Spirit of 67 is the only organization authorized to raise funds for Lake Forest School District 67.
