Volunteer Center Project: Thanksgiving Day Grocery Donation Program

You will enjoy your feast more after this family to family basket of groceries donation.

The program, created in partnership with Make It Better in 2008, supports a 3-block area surrounding the Good News Community Soup Kitchen. The kitchen receives between 200 and 500 laundry baskets filled with food and goodies for the low-income families that reside in the neighborhood.

This is not meant to be their Thanksgiving dinner, just additional grocery support.

Give Time. Give Things.

Residents and service groups in the New Trier Township and the greater northeast metropolitan Chicago area are invited to support the Good News Partner Community by donating nonperishable food items in a new laundry basket to the low income and subsidized housing residents in Rogers Park (located near Howard and Ridge on the border of Evanston and Chicago.) The recipients may be there.

This year, the program offers 2 dates for the drop-off:

Thursday, November 18: 1 – 5 p.m. (good for those unable to participate on Thanksgiving Day)

MAD_Thanksgiving_picThursday, November 25: (Thanksgiving), 10 a.m – 12 p.m.

Location: Good News Partners, 1600 W. Jonquil Terrace, (North of Howard, between Sheridan and Ridge roads) Chicago, IL 60626

Suggested items for laundry basket:

  • Large canned ham
  • Canned goods, including soup, green beans, tuna, fruits
  • Peanut butter
  • Rice
  • Pasta and pasta sauces
  • Poptarts
  • Cereals
  • Cookies

Also, feel free to have the kids decorate a card or paint a picture and wish them well. (Note: Do not sign last names or list addresses.)

Please join us and help spread thanks for each other on this day of peace. Be creative with your baskets, and enjoy sharing the gift of caring and nutrition with others. It’s a great way to start your special family day.
